Epazo Toi – Wabi-sabi Style In Lighting Design
Wabi-Sabi is an aesthetic concept of Japanese origin that emphasizes finding beauty in imperfection, impermanence and incompleteness. Wabi-sabi aesthetics is often characterized by a respect for the state of nature and an acceptance of the transient and imperfect nature of things.
Wabi-sabi style in lighting design is mainly realized through natural, rustic materials, soft, low-key light, and asymmetrical and irregular layouts. Lighting is not only to illuminate the space, but also to convey a serene, introverted and rustic attitude towards life. It creates a peaceful, cozy and textured spatial atmosphere by means of lighting. The following are the specific embodiments of wabi-sabi in lighting:
1. Soft light
Lighting in the wabi-sabi style usually uses soft, warm light rather than strong, harsh light. This light creates a warm, relaxing environment that is calming and peaceful. The brightness of the light is usually low and is mainly used for localized lighting rather than overall strong lighting.2. Lamps made of natural materials
Wabi-sabi lighting focuses on lamps made from natural materials, such as wood, bamboo, ceramics, and stone. These materials tend to have natural textures and tones that match the pursuit of nature and simplicity in the wabi-sabi aesthetic. The design of the lamps is usually minimalist, without excessive ornamentation or complex structures.3. Asymmetry and irregularity
Wabi-sabi emphasizes the aesthetics of asymmetry and irregularity, so in lighting design, symmetrical layouts or perfect shapes are not pursued. The position of lamps may be random or asymmetrical, and the distribution of light may be natural rather than uniform. This design approach reflects WabiSabi’s appreciation of the beauty of imperfection.4. Utilization of dark shadows
The wabi-sabi aesthetic emphasizes the combination of light and shadow, and the use of shadows to enhance the layering and depth of a space. Lighting does not completely illuminate every corner, but creates a subtle and mysterious atmosphere through the contrast between light and shadow.5. Craftsmanship and uniqueness
Handmade lamps are often favored in wabi-sabi style lighting design. Handmade lamps are more in line with the pursuit of uniqueness and individuality in the wabi-sabi aesthetic because of their unique and imperfect qualities.
6. Creation of spatial atmosphere
Wabi-sabi style lighting design focuses on the creation of spatial atmosphere rather than just for lighting functions. Through understated and textured lighting design, it creates a tranquil, contemplative environment that prompts people to slow down and enjoy the moment.7. Choice of color temperature
In wabi-sabi style lighting, the color temperature is usually chosen to be in the range of warm white light (approximately 2700K to 3000K). This color temperature creates a warm, cozy feeling and meets the ambient needs of the wabi-sabi aesthetic.
