How to Wire an LED Dimmer
LED Dimmers From homes and offices to commercial and industrial spaces, LED lights have revolutionized the way we control lighting in a variety of environments. They provide the flexibility to adjust the brightness of LED lights to improve the lighting environment, increase energy efficiency, and even promote health. In this article, we’ll walk you through the steps of wiring an LED dimmer, complete with a schematic for better understanding.
Types of LED Dimmers
Before you start wiring, it is important to understand the types of LED dimmers:
Tangential Dimmer: Suitable for residential applications and is the most common type of dimmer.Leading- and trailing-edge TRIAC dimmers: Suitable for LED dimmable lighting or conventional lighting, these are the most compatible dimmer types.0-10V Dimmers: Commonly used in commercial and industrial environments to provide precise control.DALI Dimmers: They are typically panelized and controlled by a DALI master controller and are suitable for intelligent systems and human-centered lighting.Smart Dimmers: These dimmers are Wi-Fi or Bluetooth enabled and can be controlled via smartphone or voice command.
Common Dimmer Wiring Jobs
Prepared Components:
LED Lamp or BulbsLED compatible dimmer switchWire (usually 14 or 12 gauge)Wire nuts or connectorsScrewdriverWire stripperVoltage testerOptional: junction box
Safety Precautions:
Always turn off the power at the circuit breaker before starting any electrical work.Use a voltage tester to make sure the power is off.Follow local electrical codes and regulations. If you are unsure of any steps, consult a qualified electrician.
Concise General Step-by-Step Guide:
Step 1: Turn Power Off
Turn off power to the circuit breaker and use a voltage tester to verify that the power is off.Step 2: Prepare Wires
Use wire strippers to strip about ½ inch of insulation from both ends of the wires that will be connected.
Step 3: Identify the Wires
Typically, you will have the following wires:
Brown/black: hot wire
Blue/white: neutral wire
Green/yellow or bare copper: ground wire
Step 4: Connecting the Dimmer
Ground Wire:Connect the dimmer’s ground wire to the electrical box’s ground wire using a wire nut.
Neutral Wire:If the dimmer has a neutral wire (usually white), connect it to the neutral wire of the electrical box.
Hot Wire:Connect the black wire of the dimmer to the black (hot) wire of the electrical box.
Step 5: Connecting the LEDs
Connect the other end of the black wire (hot) to the black wire of the LED lamp.
Connect the other end of the white (neutral) wire to the white wire of the LED lamp.
Connect the other end of the ground wire to the ground wire of the LED lamp.
Step 6: Secure All Connections
Secure all connections with wire nuts or appropriate connectors. Make sure no bare wires are exposed.
Step 7: Testing
Re-apply power to the circuit breaker and test the dimmer to ensure it is working properly.
